How They Were Built

Our building in Stoke Road has over the years had a number of uses before Signal Radio converted it into a complex that today houses seven studios, including a state of the art digital facility. But how did the building look and change as builders and engineers transformed it from its previous life as a warehouse into a series of studios and offices.

Below are some of this pictures taken as the work was carried out, through to pictures of the studios today.

When we bought the building it had to be gutted before work could start. It was a huge task for the builders and engineers involved

The main 'On Air' Studio began to take shape. From breeze block shell, it was then soundproofed and trim added before the final installation of equipment began.

The Reception area began to take shape with its huge window overlooking the main on air studio, so visitors could see the presenters at work. The long hours building took their toll on the engineers, Simon Davies only a trainee at the time, but now our Chief Engineer even resorted to sleeping on the premises to ensure the installation was kept on schedule.

Although today there are seven studios in total, initially there were only four. The main 'On Air' studio, a second programme studio, news and commercial production studios. The pictures above were as the equipment had been fitted, the plastic covering still protecting it from dust and other work going on.

Almost nearing completion, the lines room takes shape. This is the heart of the radio station and includes all of the transmission equipment needed to broadcast the station. The corridor to all studios was finished and the first office staff started to move in to prepare for launch day.

Aswell as being a hive of activity inside, the exterior of the building was also going through a facelift. New signage and lighting was errected. This for some was the first insight into the change of use for the premises on Stoke Road.

The station has always had bright colour schemes and is a vibrant place to work. The pictures above are of the sales office and our top reception area where guests can relax before meeting or 'On Air' interviews.
